What Is Single Camera Production

LESSON 1 - WHAT IS SINGLE CAMERA PRODUCTION

TASK 1

Task 1: Understanding 'single camera production'

a)   Define 'single camera production':

A piece of media filmed entirely on a single camera.

b) Identify the advantages and disadvantages of single camera production (refer to examples where you can):

Advantages

·         It’s cheaper – the fewer cameras used, the less money it will cost.
·         More aesthetic control – a single camera can incorporate more pans and long shots, and can follow action more closely.
·         Not all of the actors are required on set at all times – the scenes for one actor can be filmed while the other is off-set and vice versa.
·         It’s more practical – there are no limits when it comes to how much space is required to set up a shot as there are no other cameras around.
Disadvantages

·          The reactions are less realistic - only one actor gets filmed at a time, so the reactions aren't as natural.
·    Repetition while filming - the same scene may need to be filmed multiple times in  order to get multiple angles.
  • Less theatrical - more angles used in scenes looks more professional.

c)    What is multi camera production

Media that is filmed with more than one camera. This is usually used for larger-scale productions.

d)  How does multi-camera differ to single camera productions?

Multi-camera productions usually have a lower budget than those that use multiple cameras. They are also normally used for television comedies and sitcoms.

d) List 3 examples of single camera shows/films (aim for different genres)

1) Brooklyn Nine-Nine

2) The Office (UK)

3) Scorpion

List 3 examples of multi-camera shows (aim for different genres)

1) The Big Bang Theory

2) Will & Grace

3) One Day At A Time

e) What is the definition of genre? Why is this important for audiences?

Genre is a particular category or style that a piece of media fits into. It is important as it allows the audience to know what they're watching and, in subsequence, know what to expect. Most people will favour particular genres over others, meaning that they can browse for new television programmes or films that fit their taste.
